Bergen Harbour

Bergen Harbour

Bergen 1925. The closest is Kong Haakon, normally on the Bergen-Oslo run however, also on the Coastal Express up to Kirkenes. Behind is the Venus of Bergen Line, and on the other side of the terminal Stavangerfjord is docked. The ship behind Venus is a tourist liner, probably one of the Orient Line.

Magnar - A fascinating picture, thanks for posting. The liner to the left hand side of the pier looks to be one of the Royal Mail Line 'A' class. The vessel behind Kong Haakon appears rather small to be the Venus, could it not be one of the Bergen Line coastal express steamers? Derek

Venus (1), launched in Aug. 1890 for unknown owners, 1095 gt, 775 tdw. Purchased by Bergenske DS in 1892, in service Bergen – Stavanger – Newcastle from 1893 until 1930, at which time she was renamed Sylvia. Sold to Brødrende Anda, Stavanger (breakers) in 1933.

Derek - I think Stein is correct. However, Bergen Line got their new Jupiter in 1916, and the first Leda in 1924, both built especially for the Newcastle service, so probably the small Venus was not used that much after first WW. I think you are right about the unknown liner, i.e. of the Royal Mail Line. Maybe someone even recognize which ship it is?
