Birchgrove Park

Birchgrove Park

Collier built by J Lewis and Sons , Aberdeen in 1930 . She served the "60 Miler" trade between Sydney and Newcastle . Lost off Avalon , on Sydney's northern beaches , in August 1956 , when the weather changed for the worse . She was the last (but certainly not the first) 60 miler to be so

I remember the little ship but it was the most run down looking vessel I had ever seen with a list to port on most sightings. I remember the night she went down and the morning after as I travelled to school on the South Steyne from Manly it was I remember a rough crossing of the Heads. The model looks great, well done Jeff. Do you need a lot of coal dust to go for the "old" look.?

An awesome model Jeff!
The story of the Birchgrove Park and her tragic sinking is told in the book 'The Sixty Milers' by Norma Sim, the widow of the engineer aboard this ship on her final voyage - highly recommended.

Great model!
I wonder why you chose the Birchgrove Park?
I spent some short times on her in 1955/56 (aged 7-8) when she was berthed in Sydney.
My grandfather, Dave Waltanen, was the first mate and was drowned when she went down in August 1956.
Do you have any other photos of the model, or photos you worked from?
I'm sure my mum and her sisters (Dave's daughters) would like to see some good photos.
Birchgrove Park wasn't his only ship, as he was at sea on coastal runs at least since 1920.
The account which I have found most closely agrees with the family's recollections is in Max Gleeson's "The Vanished Fleet of the Sydney Coastline"

No worries , if you PM me with your email can send you some stuff . Building a model of a ship like that means you not only get a nice little collier but a big slice of history and folklore with it !
