Jan....phoned my father about this and the rope ladder was used for painting the funnel, they stowed it like that when not using it. The cheif enginer and the fireman painted it usualy twich during the summer fishing.Hope this answers your query.......Ally.

Hello Ally, for painting the funnel??? ,That is something I was never ever thinking about, I have been looking many years at those ladders and now you telling me that they were only there to give the funnel a face lift.

no problem Jan, my father was fireman in numerous drifters and that was one of his jobs painting the funnel. They had clips at the top so the ladder used to swivel round about the funnel to save having to put it up and down all the time. Its something i never thought of either till he told me yesterday. Mystery solved !!! Ally.
