Breydon Trader in Charlestown

Breydon Trader seen loading in Charlestown harbour, under the bow of the Maria Astumpta, which sadly got lost off Padstow few years later.

Interesting picture,

How did the China Clay get to the pier, was it by conveyor belt or trucks?

Frank,
Used to get tipped by lorries then gravity fed into the Ship, The chute was fixed therefore you had to move your ship ahead or Astern depending on where you wanted the Cargo..
Knew this Ship very well when she was the Anton Held as she was also on the Paris Trade for a number of years together with the Ship I was on, a near sister ship, Heye-P, Capt of Anton Held was Aloyius Held and his Brother was Mate they were from Haren -Ems Germany and the Ship was kept in an imaculate condition....
She did once have trouble in Par with the hold inspector (Jack I think) turned down the Hold, says it was'nt ready to load clay ie not clean enough !!!!
Alyouis took it as a personel insult, his Ship not clean enough to load clay, not having none o this he thought, closed his Hatch called the agent, papers and pilot abord, let go, then went in ballast to Rotterdam, it cost him dearly but nobody told him his Ship was not clean enough, The charterer (Lockett & Wilson,) had to find a substitute but of course all costs were deducted from Anton Held's Hire...
Very proud owners in them Days... This ship looked particulary nice when she had Masts and Derricks.

Cheers Leslie,
Got a bit of a soft spot for this class of ship, ie Flints, Heye-p, Warfleth, Anglia, Reint, must admit the wooden bridges were very draughty in the winter especially if you used to flap them down because you could never get the seals to seal again, On the Warfleth and Heye-P we used to have to flap down the Bridge for the Canal Du nord due to the very low Bridges from Dunkirk up to lille or Douia and unbolt the funnel and lift it off, after rebuilding the bridge it was never the same again....

I was on her in the eighties when she was owned by Breydon Marine. Running explosives from Essex to Drogheda. I can think of better places to take explosives
