She was completed in 1962 by Austin and Pickersgill at their Southwick yard in Sunderland for Ropner's. This was taken in Glasgow in October 1972 when she was discharging grain at Meadowside Granary.
Nice to see a picture of the Bridgepool. I joined the ship on 17 october 1972 as catering boy. She was running to Senegal and The Ivory Coast, many a beer was drank on that aft end.
Also good to see a picture of the Bridgepool as she was my first ship. Joining as Eng Cadet at Meadowside, Glasgow Dec 73, told to get there as fast as possible as ship was sailing for S. America, did sail but only as far as Alexander Stevensons dry dock, but have fond memories of the parties with the nurses from the Southern General hospital. Also found that aft end was a good place for a beer
I too joined her in Glasgow when this photo was taken, signed on 17.10.1972 as EDH. In fact the whole crew changed that day, and as a result almost all the lads were from the Glasgow pool. I remember the Old Man was very liberal and you could buy what you wanted from the bonded store, including whiskey. This was a novel thing for ratings in those days, and maybe not such a good idea with a Scottish crew!
We sailed for France to load grain and then down to Senegal and the Ivory coast to discharge. I remember some very heavy weather on the way back to the UK, paid off in Avonmouth on 2nd Jan 1973. What a New Year we had there ! John Leathem
