British Birch

British Birch

In furtherance of the RAF Gan stories , here is the 1951 built -British Birch- discharging over the stern , Aviation fuel and other fuel / lub. oils at Gan in the Indian Ocean in 1959.
My father was a civilian with the MOD and ran the islands Blackstone powered diesels of the power station.

Rick thanks for posting this one - takes me back to '71 on the Aluco - my memory of 50 yards was a bit out - but still a great run ashore!1

Rick,
Yes indeed! Many thanks for posting. I also had to do a stern discharge on her at Gaeta, not far from Naples. Whilst berthed there I remember seeing the Olympic torch being carried along the shoreline, on its way to Rome.
Somehow, she looks larger in this photo than her 12,270 dwt belies. As you probably know, she nearly came to grief the following year when she broke her crankshaft off the Norwegian Coast.
Thanks once again Rick.
Kind regards,
John.

John ;
The torch must have come from Singapore ?? I think the only commertial flights were BOAC Singapore to London Via Rome . Perhaps you can comment .
Cheers Derek

Derek,
I was referring to the time when the Birch was berthed at Gaeta, about 60 miles south of Rome, when I saw the Olympic torch being carried, not when she was at Gan! Sorry for any confusion!
Kind regards,
John.

Quite right John ;
I am " multi tasked " daily by "she who must be obeyed " .
Do This ; Do That ! No not that ; This ! etc.

In winter that is about when I go for a drive ! In summer I retreat to my boat "Mahout " and regain some sanity .

I don't like winter very much ( still I love Her and wouldn't have things any other way )

Boats are excellent things to retreat to Derek.
I spent a very pleasant day today, in lovely warm sunshine most of it too, working on my boat applying the antifouling and generally tinkering about. Due to be launched in 3 or 4 weeks so must get a move on.
Another advantage with the boat is that "her indoors" doesn't understand it all so I get left to get on with it
Regards,
Richard.
