British Princess, returning from trials

British Princess, returning from trials

A rare photo .... a BP Tanker with topmasts lowered, on the River Wear during trials. At "Worcester" we went through the exercise many times in seamanship class but never experienced the actual deed. British Princess was, of course launched by Princess Elizabeth as she was at the time.

Thanks to Jim we now have the corrected the location as given by A.D.Frost ..... humble apologies to all Sunderlandites!!! Some of us now know that topmasts were also struck at Sunderland as well as for the MSC.

I wonder who was the Second Mate on the trials as he is prominent on the docking bridge ...

Thanks to A.D.Frost we now have some more fascinating details of the photo ... I quote ...

'In the photo she is on River Wear returning from sea trials before passing under the Wearmouth and railway bridges (in background.) back to the builders after sea trials. She was the last ship to be launched from Laings West Yard so she would have been facing down river when launched. The photo shows her stern facing down river because Road bridge first and Railway bridge behind and the yard is beyond this hence she is being towed up river after sea trials.'
