They were happy wern't they......dunno that I was .... my first time across the line ...can't think where I was actually!!! They found me, got the knotched look hair do with green funnel paint splodges to highlight things a bit. that got washed out with aviation spirit out of 5 centre .... stupid thing to do really ... **** did it sting ....and we wonder why most of us are Bald now????
Great to see these lovely pictures of 'crossing the line'. Cross-ressing,impersonating a policeman/woman, assaulting a person with syrup jelly and paint. H&S would have a field day. I don't think there is quite the same fun on board ships these days.
All replaced by electronic toys, minimum crews with strange languages, etc ...
Great photos of the Sergeant, as you know I sailed on her in `58.
By the way I remember John Searle, sailed with him on the Resource(think around `59). He came from the south west,Devon or Cornwall. Met up with him again in 1992 living in Bristol, he was then just about to retire from the police.
Good luck ..... Ian (in the highlands)
Wonderfull .... yup I'm sure you were right about John, he was on the Resource he was the first one I heard call her the Racehorse. Before he joined the Sergeant he had an altercation with a bus, slid under it and smashed his leg he had quite a bit of a limp. He lived in Kingsbridge at that time a you said.
I wonder if we can conatct him ... you say in Bristol Police???
OK ... I have ways and means ... i have just this year made contact with a mate of mine from bedfordshire .. we have known each other since we were 3 but when I came down to NZ in 1974 we lost touch .... so ...if you have anything on him let me know please. David Sainsbury was my room mate and again i lost touch with him, last saw him in Bristol and he had a harem of girls working in a computer place ... in 1973 it must have been some computer? I'd love to get in touch with him too....the 4th Nav.App. was Keith Irons who was in the other aft cabin. Keith was the one who bought a "Longhi" and the first night he wore it John called us two in to see Keith next morning, stark bollocky from waste down his arms wrapped up in the longhi up around his chin ... bloody funny.
I have Johns address in Bristol, last heard from him in 2001 when we exchanged xmas cards, his wife Penny was very unwell at that time
I will send it to you, when I get back to Edinburgh next week.
John was a keen amature wireless operator, just as his father was and I will send you his call sign, if I can find it.
I am not a wirless ham ( had enough of the da dit**** at sea) so never called him on air.
