Brocklebank's SS Mathura 1

Brocklebank's SS Mathura 1

Built in 1920 as sister to Mangalor and the pair of them were the maximum size that the Hooghley and Kidderpore Dock could handle. She was shortened by 37.5 feet in 1935. 1959 she was sold to Harris and Dixon and renamed Thumara and sent to the breakers.
Michael James who sailed on her several times and is very knowlegeable about her suggests that this may be a photograph of her before the shortening which makes it a scarcer photo than first thought. Does anyone have any views on this.

Stuart, Inspection of my photo in the gallery of Mathura when I was on her in 1958 alongside yours (above) confirms that you have the original long version. It is clearly visible where the section was removed around about No.3 hatch.

Great to have this photo on record. Well done acquiring it. MikeJ
