A great picture a few years before P & O cutbacks ruined them. One of eight sisters, I sailed on Sussex, Huntingdon and Hinakura. NZS conservatively stuck to the same basic design from the 30s until 1962 with Somerset and Piako.

Looks like she`s just had a wash and brush in a dry-dock. Nice picture.
Cheers John.

She sure looks good. Guess she's going in to load for the Dominions. Great photo, thanks for sharing. Never had the fortune to sail on these - before my time, but the runs and nature of the cargos etc, tell a story of good times and grand education.

Great ships these, second Mate in this one, as they used to say, happiness is 'H' shaped.

I Believe I was on the ***berland as this picture was taken, I had signed on at Falmouth as a deck boy. Where she had been in dry dock for a freshen up.
We were on route to London Royal docks to pick up general cargo prior to sailing for New Zealand via Kingston Jamaica where we took on further cargo of Oranges. Our first port of call in NZ was Auckland where we off loaded most of our cargo before sailing to the south island where we stopped at (if my memory is correct) at Lyttleton, Duneden & Bluff Picking up New Zealand lamb before returning to the UK.

Again docking in London Royal docks to off load part of our cargo, we then sailed for Liverpool to discharge the remainder, and the bulk of the crew signed off. Fond memories.

Does anyone have details on the Fed Steam Suffolk which I believe caught fire in Auckland NZ around 1963?
