Perhaps he was on his way to the Engine Room for a bucket of steam like one poor cadet I knew.

Hey you ex Bank Line Apprentices, do you remember cleaning out the caustic soda residue from the Deep Tanks (Following Steaming of these tanks via undoing a number of the heating coils in said tanks (The caustic Soda being contained in a tin that had been puntcured on all sides and the bottom, and suspended from a closed man hole by a wire pennant. having discharged Lube Oil ex the Gulf (Lake Charles) in Aussie, prior to loading Coconut oil ex the Pacific Islands for Lever Brothers Liverpool.

Cadets could get grease anywhere Mike! Engineers on the other hand had boiler suits!
