Caltex Tanganyika

Caltex Tanganyika

Overseas Tankships, London.

8523 gross, built 1952.

Departing Melbourne, early 60's.

I believe she and her sisters were lube oil ships.

A comment re this ship as queried elsewhere, if she followed the american norm ( T2s, post war esso/mobil 27,000 - 35,000 ton ships) the engineers all lived aft

She was not a T2 but a Doxford built and engined motor ship, all the engineers did live aft and mates midships.I returned to Europe in her from Port Arther in 1958. A four ships in the class were laid down for Scandinavian
owners and bought by Caltex on the stocks.

Sailed on her as engineer apprentice on a return trip from the States. She was certainly built at Doxfords shipyard along with her three sister ships.

I sailed on her in 1966 as deck cadet & went with her to scrap in Hirao Japan.

Accommodation followed T2 & Caltex practice of Deck Officers midships & all the rest aft. A very happy ship and well fitted spacious cabins & saloons
