"Cambroman" (1892; 6,059grt) previously on Dominion Line services: Liverpool, Quebec, Montreal (Apr-Sep); Liverpool, Halifax, Portland (Nov-Mar).
The supply of 'scab' labour was organised by the (British) Shipping Federation (ship owners) This had been formed to combat trade unionism among British dockers and seamen. They recruited non-union dockers and unemployed to break the Antwerp strike. Dockers union leader and Labour MP Will Crooks tried to introduce legislation to make recruitment for strike breaking overseas illegal. Ironically many of the strikebreakers became dissatisfied with their pay and conditions and went on strike resulting in a 'mutiny' on the "Cambroman".
