I have a Capitaine Cook (Fr) listed as built 1959, 8,862 grt, 5,102 net, 11139 dwt. 519 ft loa, 62 ft br and 15.5 knots.
Sailed Nukualofa arrived Brisbane March 26th 1980.
Owned by Soc. Francaise de Nav., Noumea

I think this ship was built as Asian Express for Royal Interocean, renamed Straat Clement, Asian Express, and Nedlloyd Clement before becoming Capitaine Cook and scrapped Dalian 1984

Thanks David. She has a sister ,also. Used to see them on the Australian coast quite a lot in the 70's and early 80's.

Built in 1959 as "Straat Clement" by Flensburger, one of five sisters the others being Straats "Chatham", "Clarence", "Colombo" and "***berland", the others being built in Holland. Originally 454'08" long so has been lengthened at some stage. Subsequent names as given by David, to Sofrana in 1979 and arrived Dalian 7 August 1984.

"Capitaine Cook" was owned by Sofrana Line, which still trades between NZ and Pacific islands.

Another of this company's vessels was the "Capitaine Bouganville" which caught fire off the east coast of Northland, New Zealand in September 1975 and drifted ashore and was wrecked in heavy surf with the loss of four or five crew.

They ( Clement etc ) were lengthened by Asano Dock, Yokohama, in 1970.

Hereby two photos of the Straat Clement, first one prior to her conversion as built in 1959 and one after the conversion in 1970.
You will clearly notice the additional "crane" in front of the superstructure.
