Derek,

Thought it might bit of work to find this artist... but it was just a single minute. Disappoint! :)

CELTIC. White Star Line. 437.2 x 40.9 x 31. 3,867 grt. Laid as ARCTIC and launched 8.6.72 as CELTIC. First ship first to have gas-lit. In 1893 sold as AMERIKA ands Brest 1898.

Thought the early for the painting ( CELTIC built after 1892) better than probably 1887 rather than 1867. First immediate name was Parker Greenwood (1850 - 1904) and a similar painting style as CELTIC painting. Evidence that he was a seafarer and lived 14 Severs Street in 1882. There a gap until 1892 recorded as Parker Greenwood a marine artist as 145 Berry Street, Bootle.

For ref: Marine Artist & Liverpool, Painters, Places & Flag Codes 1760 - 1960 by A.S. Davidson Good book reference.

Hello Stephen. Many thanks indeed for doing the research on the painting. Having enlarged the original photo again and I am happy to agree the name is P Greenwood. Oddly the date still looks, even on close inspection, to be 1867 but this must be that the '6' is badly executed. Very helpful and much appreciated. Derek

Derek,

The only think that made the date to could not be 1867 was for two points... CELTIC was not built until 1872 and also that the artist was just 15 years old when he painted this canvas!
