Shows a much changed Change Alley Oct 2006.
Now located in an overhead Walkway to Clifford Pier. Some members may remember Ali from the Sixties. Camera's and Brass telescopes. He' still there!, and sends his greetings.
Ugh, a sanitised, ultra modernernised corridor with cubicles. No doubt better for the traders but somehow not the same. Though I expect the cameraderie and that old mystique still exists? Bartering against 'six kids and a greedy wife to support' It was great fun..and I've still got my Canon camera bought at a fraction of the list price to remember it all by. Happy Days.
Their style of bartering has now changed. You think your getting a bargain then they tell you its price without batteries and accessories. We were there 2 weeks ago and I found Camera equipment much cheaper in UK. The only advantage we found is they have new models earlier than back at home.
That is a great pity. The attraction of Change Alley was the jovial banter and being able to buy cameras, radios etc. at well below their list price but only after generally lengthy and light hearted bartering to set the sale price. Both Singapore and Japan during the 60's & 70's were great hunting grounds for bargains but sadly that all changed. At very least got a chilled Coca Cola.
God, the 60's are well before my time, but I got my first master copy rolex there, good times!!! On a side note, the best place to go for cameras is Lucky Plaza on orchard road, i got a camera with loads of extras at less than half the UK price, even got a UK plug adapter!!!
