Chicanoa and Golfito at Newhaven

We always used to call this type of ship a 'banana boat', but can anyone identify them?

Absolutely. I seem to recall some of them starting with Chi. I\\\'ll see if there\\\'s another shot in the collection. This name looks quite short.
Thanks

OK, I\'ve had a look at some other pics. The C class ship is CH***TA and the larger one is COL****. Also, C class ships also appeared with the same funnel markings as the larger ship.

Any help?

Thanks, Waltonian, Golfito. That name brings back some memories now. The C class chip would seem to be Chicanoa.

Another renaming job done.

Thanks to you all.

I am not convinced that the the larger ship is Golfito. I believe it is her younger sister Camito - difficult to be absolute from a stern view - a bow view would show Camito having recessed anchor housings and a different bridge front. However the reason I am pretty sure she is Camito is that her funnel has a slight dome and is unstayed. Golfito funnel was stayed and had a flatter top.

Two things tell me it is Golfito. Looking at the name on the orginal print and scan, I can see GOL (originally thought it was COL). Secondly, Jim, look at the pic you posted of Camito in the E&F threads. If you look closely at the stern, you'll see some differences. The windows at the aft of the main superstructure are different too, and it looks like Camito's funnel is indeed more domed than Golfito's. Lucky the shots are from the same angle.

Andy,
My apologies, I have had another look at the picture you refer to. You are quite right there is a difference to the location of the boat deck house windows.
The Chief Engineers cabin was on the port side, the 2nd Eng on Starboard side. Engineer's lounge between.
I should have known better -I was 2nd Eng on Camito for 2 years -- Sorry
