Carrying a bit too much sail? Maybe the men on the topgallant yards ought to have lowered the yards and hauled in on the buntlines and leechlines first...
(Neither Clark, Cutler, Chapelle or McGregor lists any clipper named Cosmopolitan, though there was a Dutch Kosmopoliet: http://d-compu.dyndns.org/blokland/afbeelding/kosmopoliet_I.jpg - and this bears some likeness to above ship. She would have had single topsails when launched)
