Columbus Australia's final departure

Columbus Australia departing Auckland 25/05/1999 to be scrapped. At this time her destination was "Sea" at the time of sailing it had not been decided where she was to be scrapped. The decision come through about 4 days later after she had been drifting outside New Zealand territorial waters awaiting orders. This photo does not reflect the noisy departure with her ship horn sounding and salutes from "Argentina Star" that was berthed behind her and an inbound vessel.

She ended up being scrapped in a dockyard in China. Columbus America (the last of the 3 sisterships) followed her a couple of weeks later. Both vessels had their voyages teminated in Auckland. The company got their fingers burnt when Columbus New Zealand was sent for scrapping in Alang, India and Greenpeace had started their campaign for more evironmentally friendly methords of scrapping ships.
