A very handsome liner! It must have been a pleasant voyage through the Caribbean and down to New Zealand. I'd have spent a lot of deck chair-time on the very wide Boat Deck...
In my view this is Gatun Locks, i.e. on the Atlantic side of the Canal and at this point in time the ship is heading West for the Pacific and New Zealand. You can see that the water level in the Lock is noticeably higher than outside.
