Later went to Cosens & Co as Consul then reverted to Duke of Devonshire for Channel cruising mostly out of Weymouth - finally re-named Consul once again

1962, to be precise! Consul was visiting Newhaven to have an ice cream freezer fitted by Lyons Maid, who had a factory on Estate Road in the town. Info from ournewhaven.org.uk, and supplied by one of the men who installed the freezer!

She was the Duke of Devonshire under the ownership of the Devon Dock, Pier and Steam Ship Company Ltd. Based at and working from Torquay.
Cosens & Co purchased her in December 1937 and re named her Consul, giving her a new lower funnel.
During the war the Admiralty painted her grey and used her as an examination vessel.
Post war, rebuilt and resumed service out of Weymouth for short excursions, mainly to Lulworth Cove. She had a shallow draught and reinforced stem which enabled beach landings.
In 1963 she was deemed uneconomic and was about to be scrapped when she was purchased by South Coast and Continental Steamers Ltd, a new company operating from Newhaven. At this time she was repainted with a plain yellow funnel, without the black topping, as she is seen in this photo.
The Summer '63 season had numerous failures and in October she steamed back into Weymouth.
SC & CS decided to run her on her old route from Weymouth to Lulworth in 1964, using local crew who knew how to keep her together.
She was sold again in 1965 to the Sailing and Travel Club of Dartmouth as an accommodation vessel and returned to her original name of Duke of Devonshire.
Their scheme did not last and she went to breakers at Southampton in October 1968.

Happy to help Derek, there is info in books that one will never find on-line, yet anyway.
For sure the picture would be 1963 because the funnel has no black topping, which it would have had on its visit in 1962.

It was rumoured in Southampton that large parts of this vessel were still on site when the breaking yard shut and the land was reclaimed.

DDP&SS Co used to run the "Duke...." and her near sister "Duchess of Devonshire" (1892) on excursion services along the South Devon coast and into West Bay from Torquay, Teignmouth and Exmouth. They were designed for landing on shingle beaches including Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Seaton and Bridport when tide and weather permitted. A kedge anchor was dropped, the steamer nosed onto the beach, a landing platform was hoisted over the side, passengers disembarking over the bow, stepping on to the beach via a long somewhat springy gangway.

There were surprisingly few mishaps though in 1934 the "Duchess" alas came to grief when her anchor dragged and she drifted broadside on to the shingle beach at Sidmouth, was holed and became a total loss.

Interesting info, Mad Landsman. I'll contact the man who installed the freezer and see what he remembers. But 1962 or 1963, what's a year between friends! :)

Eddyw, And of course, Lulworth Cove.
Much more sheltered there, Consul was the last paddler to call and when SC& CS reopened the run the 'retired' gangway had to be dragged out again.
I can certainly vouch for the springy nature of the gangway though. No way would they get it passed nowadays.
Andy, you are probably correct about a visit in 1962, but she did a season in 1963, so more photo opps, particularly when alongside being mended.
