The Costa Europa was built as the Homeric for Home Lines by Meyer in 1986, at their old yard before the covered building hall was completed. 42,092 tons; 204m oa, 1,132 passengers 1,260 max. Used on the New York - Bermuda service. I saw her in Hamilton at this time and she looked great, but Home Lines had major financial problems. The Homeric was sold to Holland America in April 1988 for delivery in November, at which time she was renamed Westerdam.
The following year Holland America was taken over by Carnival and at the end of 1989 she was returned to Meyer to be lengthened by 39 m.
She returned to service in 1990 and was now 53,872 tons, 1,494 passengers (1773). Transferred to Costa in 2002 and renamed Costa Europa.

Thanks for the info Fred. She was looking smart in January at 19 years of age. Good to see a decent funnel rather than the stove pipes from the Costa Classica onwards.
