This design of ferry seemed to age very quickly. I recall in the 80s how Islanders frowned the RF ships for the much newer Sealink ferries. Yet they were only 20 years old at the time. Notice how the Saints on the Fishbourne run are hitting 30 yet still look modern.

Lengthened; superstructure jacked-up to give freight vehicle headroom; converted to drive through; a very successful bit of ship surgery and very comfortable to travel on. Original funnel structure abaft wheel house became a little observation deck.

Near sister "Norris Castle" was similarly converted :http://www.photoship.co.uk/JAlbum%20Ships/Old%20Ships%20N/slides/Norris%20Castle-14.jpg

Sorry Stevo, cannot agree with your statement on islanders 'frowning' over them. They were very much loved ships.

Well appointed appointed lounges, a lovely bar and wonderfully cooked warm food. The ships would have a homely feel to them. After a day in Southampton, the crossing home was accompanied with the smell of cooking food and the odd beer!

Yes the Fishbourne ferries were superior, but were rather sparten in the 80s, vinyl flooring and plastic seats were not as comfortable as the Castles....
