I did a couple of runs to Deep Cove on the Athelviscount..this shot must have been taken from the Tanker Berth ? Plenty of fresh clean water in there.....at one stage there were plans mooted to ship it by tanker to Australia. Way things are going here it will happen for sure ! KPC
The cement silos in the foreground were later moved to other power schemes. I had the honour of working on this plant when it finally reached the Tongoriro Power Scheme in the middle of the North Island in the mid 70s.
Did a trip on Swedish Mirrabooka to Deep Cove as passenger from Wellington when delivering transformers.From memory each a 120 ton heavy lift.Fantastic trip rounded off by a being taken over the Wilmont Pass & down into huge underground generating chamber.Kiwi
I spent some time in the area on a major survey in the mid 1960's. Several things come to mind about the place, One was the sandflies; two; you could catch wild deer by hand as they swam from island to island; three; the size of the cray fish and 4; the continous rain.
When we completed the updated charts we found that some very old notations made by Capt Cook RN were very accurate.
