The old Island Princess. Built in 1972. Voyages of Discovery's only ship. She must be nearing the end of her operational life. Her engines will need to be replaced to meet European pollution standards and it will cost a great deal of money to bring her up to the 2010 SOLAS safety standards.

I think that her original name was "ISLAND VENTURE" and she was sold to Princess cruises and then became ISLAND PRINCESS. In the 1970's P+O bought her and the company "Princess Cruises". She then stared together with the "Pacific Princess" in the TV series called "The Love Boat".

Correct Frank.
The full initial story was that two Norwegian shipowners joined together to build two cruise ships under the name Norwegian Cruiseships A/S. They started out owning both ships jointly. Island Venture was the second of the pair and was delivered in January 1972. She was operated by Flagship Cruises from New York to Bermuda, but the activity was a failure. In September 1972 the business was restructured and each of the ships became the sole property of one of the partners. Island Venture went to Fearnley & Eger A/S and was chartered to Stanley B McDonald's Princess Cruises, renamed Island Princess and began work from Los Angeles.
She became a success in her new role and attracted the attention of P&O, who had failed to make any significant impression in the American cruise market. P&O bought Princess in mid 1974 to obtain their expertise and marketing techniques. In August 1974 P&O bought Island Princess plus her sister for delivery in 1975 as the Pacific Princess. The P&O failure, Spirit of London, was spruced up and became the Sun Princess. Through Princess, P&O at last had a successful American cruise operation with three modern ships. The success became a bonanza because of their use in the Love Boat TV Series

Just completed a 3 week cruise on her including the "Maritime Memories" cruise from Harwich to Barcelona organised by Des Cox of Snowbow.

I believe there ara 3 or 4 Maritime Memories cruises being planned for next year. I
would thoroughly recommend them to all here.Loads of "Ships Nostalgia", "Swinging
the lamp" etc. with fellow ex seafarers of every rank.

The ship herself is in excellent condition. A real pleasure to be aboard though I found the shore excursion part of cruising not very pleasant due to large numbers of passengers from large numbers of ships!!
