Victoria Pier, Douglas with three paddle steamers. Furthest away, the smallest, with single funnel, is the (Blackpool) North Pier SS Co's "Greyhound" (1895; 542 grt) no doubt on a day trip from the Lancs resort. Entering harbour 'dressed overall' with paddles going astern is Isle of Man SP Co's "Prince of Wales" or "Queen Victoria" (sisters, both 1887; 1,568 grt). On the outer berth of the pier is the same company's flagship "Empress Queen" (1897; 2,140 grt, 21.5 knots), by Fairfield, Govan, claimed as the largest and fastest cross-channel paddle steamer ever built.
