SO WHERE IS THE WATERLINE???

-draft reading, Odessa early 1976

The distinctive "notch" out of the stern was necessary for her to fit above the building dock gate when she was constructed at Haverton Hill on the Tees

If my memory serves me correctly she docked at Palmers on the Tyne after seatrials and the stern was cut away to allow the dock gates to close.

They should have cut the whole ship away - "100 and odd thousand tons of ocean-going heartbreak"! I was going up for my 2nd's ticket at the end of the voyage and took some bearing clearances in case it came up in the orals. "Peak of the cap" was not an expression I could use in front of the examiner though, as the Gotaverken feelers fitted in including their case...

It is absolutely correct in regard's to the Stern's when Furness began to build the "Super's" . as they were built larger they took over the mantle of "Super". I believe the "Naess Parkgate" may have been the first to have her Stern chopped? and my old ship the "Har Addir" the second.
