In the scrolls aft were also "Heaven's light our guide" and "Where there's a Willis a way". The last was a play on Capt. Willis's name.

John Willis was her owner, he had a father named john "jock" Willis who was a captain, but the first captain of the Cutty Sark was George Moody. Six others followed him, none of them named Willis. You may have meant nothing that contradicts this with you posting, but I still think that as it reads it might be worth a little bit of clarifying.
