Completed as Alster for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen by Deschimag Werk Vulcan, Hamburg.
On 18 March 1940 she was taken over by the Kriegsmarine and used as a troop transport in Operation Weserubung, the invasion of Norway.
On 10 April 1940 she was captured by HMS Icarus in the Vestf
