Launched by Lady Freyberg in December 1953, the Essex made her maiden voyage from London out to Auckland, Napier and Wellington under command of Captain L. W. Fulcher in July 1954. In April 1956 she created a record of being the largest Conference Line vessel to negotiate the Victoria Channel to Dunedin.
