Europa and Bremen

North German Lloyd's largest and fastest passenger liners Europa (49,746 grt) and Bremen (51,656 grt) seen here at the Columbuskaje in Bremerhaven. They achieved maximum speeds of 27.91 resp. 27.83 kn on the North Atlantic Route and won both the Blue Riband in 1929 and 1930.

Could this be earlier than 1933, as both seem to have the original short funnels?

Hello eddyw,

you're right. The picture was taken in March 1930 before the funnels were enhanced. Only the postcard, which I've scanned was labeled on Sept. 19th, 1933.

I presume that the one offshore is the EUROPA? How can one tell them apart anyway?

Offshore is BREMEN.
The window arrangement of the Wintergarten underneath the starboard bridge wing tells the difference. BREMEN has single windows while on EUROPA they are in blocks of four.
