The ship is Sitmar's Fairstar not the Fairsea - this is her maiden arrival in Melbourne, I think, this picture having appeared in "Port of Melbourne Quarterly" to mark her introduction
always thought she looked great in sitmar colors, but p&o made her not so nice by adding the deck at her stern and those horrible strange funnel logos, bring back sitmar
Thank you Paulo, how could I have made such a mistake!!. And no argument Neil, wasnt sure which it was. Ah well, maybe next time I'll get it all correct.
First seen Fairstar in 64, just another Sitmar Liner that no one including myself seemed to have much regard for.
Didn't see her again until 97 but had heard plenty about her between times, she was mostly popular as Australias regular cruise ship then she was replaced by Fair Princess.
Wife and myself sailed on Fair Princess first cruise leaving Darling Harbour late afternoon, sailing under Sydney Harbour Bridge one could clearly see Fairstar tied up in Garden Island Naval Dockyard, she was awaiting a tow.
As Fair Princess passed her she gave a farewell salute on the horn to which Fairstar replied.
Her worthy long service had been recognised, she was gone when we returned.
