Fernteam

Seen here in 1984 awaiting berth at Tobata/Hibikanada. One of a series of ships built by Gotaverken in the late 70's. Also Australian Purpose/Pioneer.

I took this shot from the bow of the Australian Purpose leaving Tobata for the Pilbara and another load of iron ore. They were fairly ordinary ships but on a good run. Always had a few nights in the Japanese ports and the Aus dollar was still worth a few yen. But that was over 20 years ago so perhaps I am being overly nostalgic. The Purpose was sold to COSCO in the late 80's and sank in the Indian Ocean en route to Port Kembla with a load of Iron Ore. All the crew were picked up by a passing ship.

Thanks Bno. There are some photos around of these ships laid up in the Oslo fjord in winter time. I would like to see them if anyone out there has one.

Thanks for the info about Australian Purpose, Ian. I sailed on her too - didn't know she sank. A lot of folk didn't like the P Boats but I thought they were Ok.
