First Linkspan in New Zealand

First Linkspan in New Zealand

This is the last bit of rail/road until Picton.

This span was built in Wellington in 1961 to accommodate the new ARAMOANA which would usher RORO into New Zealand. The rails have since been removed. the ARAHURA banner promtes a newly refiited ship.

What was the urgent work that was carried out to the berth just prior to the arrival of the Aramoana. It was all hushed up.

The Lyttelton ramp lay unused for many years and the ramp itself was actually hauled up onto the shore. It was re-instated for use with the BASS REEFER during her brief period on the NZ coast.
