It is a roll-damping-tank. The S 523 arriving in after her used to have a similar showing before her rebuild.

The function of the sail is also to damp the roll of the vessel.
For many years a sail like this was mounted on most of the danish anchor seiners.

you would think that extra weight up there would make her roll more.............. but surely not.
im thinking if a boat needs that shes not very good, wont be signing on...
i know the sail steadys them up a bit,prefer that idea to the tank.

Inexpensive stabilising. The flow of water across the tank lags the roll period of the vessel and tends to neutralise it. In certain conditions It can exacerbate it tho
