I have just discovered what type of main engine this ship had. It was a Krupp Dieselmotor type 5 Z 125. I'd never heard of it before. Does anyone have any details of the Krupp range of large marine diesels?

Hi bob,
I don`t know the complete range but Krupp has always built Marine Diesels from small 1 cyl for workboats and yachts to the famous 1.100 hp U-Bootsdiesels.
The biggest engine one was of type K98FF-h, 8 cylinder 30.400 hp, weighing 1.270 tons, built in a 150.000 t OBO-Carrier at AG "Weser" yard in 1969.
Krupp took over Atlas-MaK in 1964, now Caterpillar since 1997.
Best wishes, Manfred

Thanks, Manfred,
It all fits into place now. Atlas MaK became Krupp-MaK and presumably then concentrated on the production of medium-speed, four stroke ship engines. I passed through Kiel recently and noticed that the original MaK logo on the Kiel-Friedrichsort factory is far more prominent than that of Caterpillar. Quite right too!!
Regards
Bob
