Gasikara

Gasikara

One of possibly 3 sisters that called in Durban during the late 80's, Gasikara apparently was lost in a cyclone. The ships used to do the run to the Indian Ocean islands and I believe actually carried livestock.

Interesting photos reklaw...

She is the ex " Ville de Strabourg" built in La Ciotat, France in 1975.
Sold to Madagascan interests & renamed " Gasikara" in 1988.

On 07/02/1991 during a voyage from Bangkok to Capetown she was posted as missing & presumed lost with all hands during the Cyclone " Bella".

A search was made by the French naval patrol boat "La Rieuse" but nothing was ever found.

I can find very little information about this tragedy, rather surprisingly.
One brief mention is in the history of the "La Rieuse" at :-

http://www.netmarine.net/bat/patrouil/rieuse/histoire01.htm

& scroll down to 1991.

Her last reported position was in the Mauritius area on 30/01/1991.

regards,
Rick

Thanks Rick,
Now her original name rings a bell, her one sister (Tamarind) was Villa De Jeans or Villa De Est, I dont recall the other sisters name and cant find a pic of her. They were very pretty ships too.

reklaw,
"Ville de Genes" became the "TAMARIN" - no " D" !

She had several names and went for scrap as the "Mastrofalias" at Alang on 28/09/1996.

I think there were several more sisters too. Yes, i agree, good looking vessels .

regards,
Rick
