Hello Rick - of your mention of old Discharge Books.
I bought this at a flea market a few years ago.
Gilbert Powell - born 1913 at Bristol..
Address in book is St Chads Road Tilbury.
Only five numbers - R 62451.
Only one entry in page 2...
Regards
Stan

Hi Hamish,
Many years ago I was told they were the stamps of the BOT office where you paid off..
Maybe true but there must have been a few different ones..
I have 16 discharges in my book from Empire Baltic in nearly 5 years.
We always signed on for 6 Months Agreement but never completed that much time without
a change of Articles...we were on Tilbury -Hamburg service on Home Trade articles but we
occasionally went to Baltic ports with new cars and then we paid off and signed on the new
Foreign articles at Tilbury..
Of the 16 VG VG stamps many have the number 18 but also some odd ones from the same
BOT office..

Thanks for that Stan.Yes did that a couple of times too, running Hamburg Goole with scrap,circa1949, then a couple of trips thru the Keel canal, had to resign, but it had its good points, got payed time off(running up to the shipping office)and it did tend to keep the paybook all square! regards H

See an old friend there-"Ariguani"-I was 3M in her in '56.The last few months of her life before she was scrapped. The numbers in the VG space are specific to the "Shipping Master" supervising the Payoff rather than the Port.Looking at the thirty two pay-offs I did from Fyffes ships in Garston,Avonmouth and Southampton the number always matches the SMs'signature in the last column on the page, rather than the Shipping Office.

Regards
