She is one of a pair, the other one is named "Falken", which is Swedish for "The Falcon", a straight enough name. But what could "Gladan" mean? " It had to be a bird of prey, and after a bit of search I found a "Glada" to be a "Black Kite" (and also Red Kite), a bird I have never heard of in either Swedish or English. The two schooners were both ordered for the navy, but both have been intermittently used for the education of merchant seamen. And they are both still afloat.
