Hi Ray
I remember these Zulu rickshaw drivers only too well in the mid 1960's. The one that I hired for a short sightseeing tour along the beachfront at Durban, reneged on the agreed fare, when what seemed like miles from anywhere, demanded 3 or 4 times as much to take me back to the relative safety of the beachfront where I got on. I learned later that this was quite a common scam among these drivers.
Anyone else experience this?

Yes it is. We sailed together for 25 months in Bank Line first trip. Met him next when he was mate with the North boats and I sailed as passenger, and then when he was a pilot in Aberdeen and I was skipper on a supply vessel, and then finally by chance the day he had been diagnosed with cancer.

There are a few shots of him in my photo gallery
