Next to the ferry terminal - Commercial Wharf was always busy.
Hoveringham IV a dredger,is berthed on West Street Pier which is now obsolete.
Beyond are the chimneys of Northfleet Power Station - they were demolished in 1994.
I have posted another photo today of this area as it has been redeveloped..

Left to right: one of Crawley's bunker or freshwater barges, unidentified (but looks familiar to me) cargo ship; one of Palmer's estuarial motor barges; the Hoveringham dredger.

Its the 'Hoveringham VI'. The 'IV' & 'V' were smaller and a different design. Regards

Possibly one of Palmer's 'Bettle Barges' X. Lighters, the motor barge could be either the Lady Kitty or one of Francis & Gilders, the Josh Francis or Cecil Gilders.

Yes Robin,it may be Lady Kitty.
We riggers often stored tankers at Thameshaven and Coryton.
If the stores came by road it was a long and arduous job along the jetty,
especially with 40 gallon drums of lube oil and drums of paint.
Often the stores were loaded into Lady Kitty at this wharf in Gravesend
and brought down river to the tankers - it was then a much easier job for us..

That's a nice evocative shot Stan. I'm not sure that the vessel to the left is the Lady Kitty. Difficult to tell, but the wheelhouse and stern areas do not look right, too angular and modern-ish. The deck looks more like that of a tanker too. Like Bob says, possibly a Crawley fuel or water barge?

Thankyou Phil,
I think Robin is referring to the one on right as being Lady Kitty
as I do also.
On left may be Crawley's Tommy..

Stan
