Maybe,but there/s a lot of unemployment.All the area offers now is supermarkets and overpriced housing.There are even flats going up on the quayside next to the big crane.

What a busy looking place. Can someone tell me please - in the middle distance, there appears what looks like four ships berthed side by side. Is that the case, or are my eyes failing me again?

The Admiralty used Great Harbour Greenock for many types of vessel, and also RMAS vessels. They used to have barges for raising sunken submarines. Also to be seen were the weather ships such as Weather Reporter and Admiral Beaufort. They were converted WW2 corvettes.
The ship in the foreground looks like a Clan Line vessel. Also to be seen is a boom defence ship. Ships carrying sugar from the West Indies used to dock there, unloading cargo for the Greenock sugar factory. Sugar line and Harrisons were frequent visitors. Those were the days.

If 1954 could be Clan Robertson judging by long name, fancy top on funnel and extended centrecastle to talke in no 4 hold, landing craft at Great harbour berth

Clan Robertson...Great name...great clan...."Virtutis Gloria Merces" - (Glory is the Reward of Valour). How do I know???........hehehe.
