Far too specialised a class of warship with no room for modernisation and vulnerable to surface attack.
Palliser was laid up for 10 years before being broken up in 1983.

I served in Palliser twice, 1962/3 and did five 6 weeks FP patrols in the arctic. It was scary in the winter months, in force 10 storms. The bridge armour plated windows used to get stoved in, and the ships boats shredded to matchwood. I also brought her out of reserve to re-commission at Portsmouth in 1971, to go into the Dartmouth training squadron. Very happy ship though!

Never served on any of the Blackwoods but visited a couple. I always loved watching this class as they always gave me the impression of busy little terriers ferreting around.

Great photo ekd, I served in Exmouth, 1964/5, FPS before major conversion to Gas. Good memories, apart from chucking up every time we sailed - good training for the stomach before being drafted to CMSs though.
