Macca,
That cut out was already there when she was a merchant ship - so as to provide working space when conducting seismic work or deploying equipment.

Am I missing something here or is there really no hanger for a helicopter?

If the answer is no hanger then I presume there is no embarked helicopter either which would seem strange.

You're correct there is no hanger.
It's all a moot point really, as the Lynx helicopters which were expensively modified for Antarctic service and carried by Endurance have been withdrawn from service, ergo even if they wanted to deploy an organic helicopter, the RN has no suitable aircraft.
Still, I suppose the new Protector is at least approaching fit for purpose in contrast to HMS Scott, which had been deputising for Endurance.
