Amazing picture Stein. This must be the precursor to the modern purse net. I wonder what these guys would think of todays 2500 tonne super trawlers.

Sadly the herring is no longer there to catch in this way. In Norway the earlier herring fisheries is called "sildeeventyret," literally "the herring fairy tale." You just scooped it up inside the fjords, until 58-59 when it was "black sea" as the they say here. (Some pictures and a video on this Norwegian page. The herring has to some degree returned, but while it's been gone the Norwegians have lost their taste for the fish, and there's not much money in catching it today. Regards, Stein.
