Jeez, Stein! I am getting vertigo just looking at those sailors on the yards! And to think, the photographer was higher still, probably having to have lugged a huge box camera up the mast. Incredible photo of "how it was".

While under German flag she carried a large complement of cadets, so her crew number then is not really comparable to the number under Finnish flag. But the numbers are: Norddeutscher Lloyd 81. Gustaf Erikson 31.

To answer Dave: It is about as high as you get, but the photographer, W. L. A. Derby, was probably holding a nice pocket size retractable lens Leica in one hand. The time is the mid-thirties, when all but Gustaf Erikson of Mariehamn had given up on cargo carrying under sail.

When under Finnish ownership I wonder what they did with all the extra accommodation space previously used for the cadets?

So do I. I would suppose that Erikson tried to find some way to earn money on those spaces. That he willingly would let the crew use them as they saw fit is unthinkable.
