I remember when one of them tied up behind us at B.A. in 1959. Watching a certain section of the catering crowd going ashore was a real eye opener for a naive sixteen year old!
Very distinctive with those squat funnels, talking of which we use to run past the remains of a Highland boat on the way into the Plate but have no idea how it came to be there.
The shipwreck on the way into River Plate is possibly HIGHLAND HOPE wrecked November 1930.
She was one of the six sisterships built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast between 1928-32. - She was replaced by HIGHLAND PATRIOT ordered after this loss. - HIGHLAND PATRIOT herself was torpedoed by U-38 on 1st Oct 1940 while en-route Buenos Aries to River Clyde. Built for Nelson Line the remaining five were transferred to newly formed Royal Mail Line in 1932
my first trip to sea was aboard the Highland Chieftain bound for south america.via Vigo Lisbon, Rio de janerio. Motevideo and Buanus Aires. although it was 63 years ago I remember all those places and the exitment of my first time away from home.
Aaaah happy days. OR Not, really hard work.
