Torrens made an interesting comment in an earlier image, that the Kiwis looked at purchasing Type 21s, but decided to go with the Leanders, purchasing Bacchante and Dido. Can someone explain that to me. I understand the need for compatibility but why purchase a virtually obsolete vessel? By 1983, the Dido was 20 years old with an obsolete Ikara, Mortar weapon fit and Sea Cat had seen it's day.

Yes cost would have been a factor, but long term did that 20 year old Leander prove value for money as an effective front line unit?

Bacchante would have been a good purchace but have to agree with the tranfer of Dido. Saying that, they managed to keep her running till 1995 although from pics I've seen very little changed on her for the rest of her service, not much of her weapons would have been effective in 1995!
I cant really find much info on her in her later years.

I think I read somewhere along time ago that they got her for Free From the RN, but not totaly sure about that?

just read up in 'Leander class frigates' by Osborne and Sowdon. Southlands machinery and weapons were extensively overhauled, mortars were removed and mk32 torpedo tubes were fitted, (something usefull anyway) Which begs the question why not rip off that gastly forward superstucture and useless ikara system and fit an oto melara?

She was the only New Zealand Leander fitted with Ikara while the rest are fitted with guns. Perhaps RNZN may have a good reason for it, but I certainly agree with Macca why not remove the superstructure and replace in with 4.5 in or Oto Melara. At least she looks better. Best regards. Tipahmh.

When Aurora and Euryalus were sold to DML, the plan was to remove the Ikara zareba and refit with a gun, but this of course never happened and no buyers were found.
