Modified enclosed bridge came into being in 1956/7, sold to Peru in 1960 --sold as seen---he final commission in the RN was 1958/9--she arrived back in Portsmouth in December 59 from the Far East and the Peruvian navy took charge in Jan.60 sailing from Portsmouth in Feb.60-

RHP, they shift ballast, normally liquid - water or fuel. In the days of sail it was much more complicated shifting barrels of water, meat etc.

The cables are not "knotted" but are actually joined by a swivel which is visible as the larger object at the join in cables. She is lying to two anchors so as to limit swinging room.
This was a reasonably common procedure in warships which were to lie at anchor for a while, with limited swinging room and where manpower was plentiful.
