With things hotting up with Argentina and Spain whinging on, it would have been handy to have these ships eavesdropping on Spanish / Latin American communicas. One patrolling off Gib and the Falklands whilst the other two are working up/ refitting. Once Lusty goes next year the game would really be up if and aggressive moves were realised.

There's no way in which our stupid politicians will understand this
They failed with the Falklands the first time around; why would they get it now, either the Falklands or Gib
It turns out that it was only Thatcher's determination that got naval action approved
We are in the ridiculous situation where only the Illustrious remains as an aircraft carrier, but for helicopters
And the two new carriers won't have any aircraft for some years!!!
And we sold the Harriers to, guess who? The Americans who clearly understand its strategic value, even though the design is now old
But Cameron and Co are too stupid to understand any of this
And some of us on this board elected them into power!!!
LOL, I really despair

The sad thing is its irrelevant who gets elected, the military are not a priority....I was tempted to add 'until they are needed' but I'm not even sure that's true.

Jay, you are on my wavelength, been saying this for ages , if another Falklands rears its head we will be in sh-ts creek but does the present governing body listen-no-they are more interested in other countries predicaments and not what is going on on their own door step,we had problems raising a battle fleet last time what will it be like now,get those ships updated and back in service at what ever cost ---we seem to throw billions of tax payers money about on mundane things,I believe building up our naval forces as a priority, the sooner the better.

Have to agree with all the comments, a total waste of four of the most useful fighting ships we have had in recent years, fully trained sailors laid off and a serious gap in our capabilities. Our current, and previous, government are c**p at seeing the blindingly obvious, all too willing to stick their oar in with other nations problems and throwing our money at them but don't seem to realise we are an island and their first priority is defence of the realm and its dependencies.

We need to scrap these to pay for the space programme in Nigeria, much more important than looking after our armed forces.

Like you Its a waste of good ships and men BUT one T45 could put pay to the entire Argentine Airforce as could The Typhoons down there(2 QRA and 2 on standby or service). Lets not forget our Nuc's if they sent another "Armada"do you think they would get near the Falklands? What bothers me most is we do not have any new ships that can replace them like for like on the stocks and we are faffing about on T26 while increasing the load on our existing frigates which are expected to last another 10+ years

The defence budget is now paying for the all-conquering NHS which will eventually suck the whole nation dry. Politicians get less flak for reducing the defence budget than if they tried to reduce the massively inefficient and fraudulent NHS and Social Security mafia operations.
